Eating Out: The Secret Garden, Cardiff

Nestled away in Bute Park is a hidden gem. The Secret Garden Cafe was taken over this spring by the amazing team from Penylan Pantry and both have been high on my wishlist for visits ever since. With plants hanging from the ceiling, behind those beautiful red brick walls is an outdoor haven of well designed, beautifully executed, homey, coffee shop goodness.

As we turn to a more and more plantbased way of life, I am using it as an excuse to visit every menu in Cardiff and with autumnal sunshine forecast, the leaves of the park at the perfect tipping point of golden colour, a seat outside basking in what is my favourite season was the perfect way to start last weekend.

Celebrating seasonal, homemade goodness, it was their Instagram post about vegan friendly jaffa hot chocolates that secured our attention and BOY did they not disappoint. Every detail is considered from the plants, to the seat cushions, the crockery, the ingredients and the jar of dog biscuits, everything about this place feels welcoming and just gorgeously good for you. The hot chocolates were thick and creamy, my plate of tomatoes and butterbeans on toast was cosy and hearty, and above all else, delicious. J’s sandwich whilst not plantbased was ENORMOUS, so meat eaters will be very happy and can indulge in amazing local produce. I could have eaten half the menu and cannot wait to return to try out the waffles and the stunning array of cakes!

If you are looking to make the most of a dry morning, even if it is getting colder, grab a blanket from the basket and pull up a chair because this place is worth it.
